About the film:
Ardh Satya (1983) directed by Govind Nihalani is a landmark film of the Indian parallel cinema movement. The title which translates to "Half Truth" is taken from a poem by Marathi writer Dilip Chitre and it perfectly encapsulates the central theme of the film.
The film follows the story of Sub-Inspector Anant Velankar (played by Om Puri in a career-defining role) an idealistic young police officer who enters the force with a strong sense of justice and duty. However he soon finds himself confronted with the harsh realities of a deeply corrupt system where politicians and local dons have a powerful nexus with the police force. Anant's attempts to do the right thing are repeatedly thwarted by his superiors and the powerful local gangster Rama Shetty (Sadashiv Amrapurkar).
Ardh Satya is a psychological exploration of its protagonist's inner turmoil as he struggles between his principles and the crushing weight of a system that forces him to compromise. The film delves into the themes of corruption moral decay and the frustration of an honest individual trapped in a web of deceit. It is a powerful and unsettling portrayal of how an upright person can be consumed by the very system they are meant to uphold.
